The problem of low head in slurry pumps can occur in our daily usage. Pansto Pump Industry will list several factors that can affect the head:

Firstly, insufficient head refers to the situation where the discharge pressure of the slurry pump cannot meet the requirements of the site conditions. There are several possible causes for this:

  1. Check if cavitation occurs in the slurry pump. When there is a certain amount of air mixed in the liquid, as the pressure decreases, the solubility of gas in the liquid decreases, leading to the formation of bubbles. When the bubbles burst, the high-speed impact on the surface of the components can cause damage to the impeller, resulting in strong destructive force. This phenomenon is called cavitation. Cavitation can affect the head of the pump, so we need to check if cavitation exists.
  2. Check if the impeller is severely worn. The slurry pump mainly relies on the centrifugal force generated by the rotation of the impeller to transport the slurry. After a period of use, the impeller will inevitably wear out. The time and degree of wear depend on the characteristics of the slurry at the site. If severe impeller wear is found, it needs to be replaced.
  3. Check if the motor speed is lower than the required speed of the slurry pump. The slurry pump is generally driven by a motor, and the rated speed of the motor is fixed. For example, the rated speed of a 2-pole motor is 2980 rpm, and the rated speed of a 4-pole motor is 1480 rpm, etc. If the pump is connected to the motor through a belt drive, it is necessary to check if the pulleys can achieve the required speed of the pump.
  4. Check if there are any air leaks in the pipelines and pump chamber.
  5. Adjust the outlet valve. If the head cannot be increased, the outlet valve can be partially closed to create back pressure and increase the head.

These are common reasons for low head. You can try them out. If these cannot solve the problem at your site, you can also contact us and let our technical experts help you troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
