When purchasing a slurry pump, people often focus only on the selection of the pump and motor, neglecting the coupling that connects these two components. However, the selection of the coupling is equally important as it transfers the energy from the motor to the slurry pump.
In addition, the correct installation and alignment of the coupling are frequently overlooked. Improper installation and misalignment can lead to premature wear of the coupling or potential failures, even damaging the pump and motor.
The primary function of a coupling is to transmit power and accommodate misalignment and axial movement. Sometimes, the coupling also needs to absorb shocks and vibrations. The selection of the right coupling depends on four basic conditions of misalignment or movement in the shafts:
Parallel misalignment occurs when the two shafts do not share the same rotational axis. Their end faces may be parallel, but their centerlines are laterally displaced from each other.
Angular misalignment applies to situations where the shafts are neither concentric nor parallel. The angular misalignment of the shafts can be symmetric or asymmetric.
End float occurs when one or both of the shafts exhibit axial movement, i.e., moving inward and outward. For example, motors with sliding bearings experience end float as they search for the magnetic center of the rotor winding within the magnetic field. Temperature changes can also cause thermal expansion and variations in shaft position.
Torsional flexibility refers to flat twisting motions perpendicular to the axis. This often occurs due to impacts or vibrations. Torsionally flexible couplings absorb and dampen these movements.
For elastic couplings, they should be able to handle both parallel and angular misalignment. Couplings with four-way flexibility can accommodate both end float and torsional movements simultaneously.
