Measures to Improve Wear of Slurry Pumps

Slurry pumps are widely used in important sectors such as mining, metallurgy, coal, hydropower, and transportation. During the process of transporting solid-liquid mixtures such as slurry, coal slag, and mud, the impeller of the slurry pump is subjected to severe wear due to the impact of solid particles, resulting in a shortened service life of the slurry pump and affecting the normal operation of the equipment. Therefore, reducing the wear of the slurry pump impeller is crucial in practical production. Shijiazhuang Pump Industry would like to introduce several measures to improve the wear of slurry pumps.

In actual applications, the following measures are usually taken to reduce wear of slurry pumps:

  1. Adopting reasonable impeller geometry parameters: To meet the required head and reduce wear, a larger blade inlet diameter and outlet width are selected. This reduces the relative velocity at the impeller inlet, decreases impeller wear, and prevents clogging.

  2. Proper matching of volute casing and impeller: If the shape of the slurry pump volute casing is improperly designed, it will accelerate wear. During design, consideration should be given to achieving the best match with the impeller, minimizing the velocity of the fluid flow inside the volute casing while meeting the pump performance. Otherwise, wear will be severe.

  3. Selecting materials based on medium characteristics: The service life of the slurry pump is closely related to the appropriate choice of materials. When selecting materials, the geometric shape and particle size of the solid particles in the slurry should be fully considered. If the solid particles are small, have regular shapes, uniform distribution, and no sharp points, non-metal materials such as rubber and engineering plastics can be chosen, providing good wear resistance while reducing costs. When the solid particles in the slurry have highly irregular geometries and a wide particle size distribution, materials with high hardness and good wear resistance, such as hard nickel and high-chromium cast iron, should be selected as they have certain advantages in resisting wear from solid particles in the slurry.

  4. Adopting a rational anti-wear structure: Using a rational structure is an effective way to slow down wear of the slurry pump. For example, setting liners, increasing the thickness of liners and impellers, and using secondary vanes and impellers can also reduce wear.

Currently, the most wear-resistant slurry pump in China is produced by Shijiazhuang Slurry Pump Industry Co., Ltd. It uses Xinhai Wear-Resistant Rubber as its lining, which is renowned worldwide. It has high corrosion resistance, acid resistance, and alkali resistance, and is being increasingly used in various industries.

In the design process of slurry pumps, a fixed design pattern cannot be used to meet different working conditions. Instead, appropriate design parameters and material selection should be based on ensuring flow rate and head while considering the actual application of the slurry pump, achieving an economically feasible solution.
